Panthers draft: Breaking down the top-two OT prospects in 2021

Rashawn Slater’s fit on the Carolina Panthers
If Penei Sewell is selected before the Carolina Panthers get the chance to take him, then Rashawn Slater wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize if they eventually miss out on the top-four quarterback prospects. The Northwestern offensive lineman has seen his draft stock rise more than most in recent months, with an exceptional performance at his pro day doing nothing to put off willing suitors.
There are some who are speculating that Slater might be the first tackle taken, although that will probably change once Sewell gets to showcase his exceptional physical attributes at Oregon’s pro day on April 2.
Slater is a plug-and-play starter at the next level with a Pro Bowl ceiling. His footwork is outstanding for a player his size, with his power at the point of attack another noteworthy trait that really catches the eye.
The left tackle also plays the game with a nasty streak that would make him an instant fan favorite in Carolina. Matt Rhule loves players who work hard and maximize effort on every down. So if they are planning on going with blindside protection with their first selection then Slater will be extremely high on the shortlist.
Versatility to play anywhere across the line is another intriguing element to Slater’s potential. Much will depend on how the draft plays out in front of them, but the Panthers could do far worse.
