Top college QBs could be gone by No. 8

A recent move by the San Francisco 49ers has shaken up the very top of the 2021 NFL Draft. They are now sitting at No. 3 overall and with the pick of quarterbacks after Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson came off the board as expected, which has the potential to come with some significant complications for the Carolina Panthers.

For one, it would be a massive surprise if the Atlanta Falcons were receptive to any trade with their NFC South rival that lands them a potential franchise signal-caller. However, if another team came up with the goods, then they would probably consider it.

This would mean the Panthers could miss out on the top-four quarterback prospects – although much will depend on whether the Niners go bold and take Mac Jones instead of Justin Fields or Trey Lance.

Whichever way they go, it might be worth Carolina getting themselves a primary left tackle such as Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater, which is a position they wouldn’t have to worry about for the next decade if both reach their ceiling.

Taking the fifth quarterback off the board or waiting until the mid rounds for someone like Jamie Newman or Kellen Mond isn’t going to bring immediate assistance. This would ensure Teddy Bridgewater is next year’s quarterback, so getting more prominent help should mean there are no more excuses where the player is concerned.

It’s not the best possible outcome, to put it mildly. But the simple fact is that the Panthers could end up being the biggest losers from San Francisco’s deal with the Miami Dolphins.
