Derrick Brown – Carolina Panthers DT

There were some who wanted the Carolina Panthers to select linebacker Isaiah Simmons out of Clemson over Derrick Brown at No. 7 overall in 2020. The defensive tackle came with plenty of questions despite standing out like a sore thumb during his time at Auburn. But just one season into his professional career, it’s already apparent that the organization made the right choice.

Brown grew in stature as the campaign went on and made some outstanding plays along the way. He did struggle at times stopping the run, which is to be expected regarding first-year players on the interior. But his ability to create constant havoc in opposing backfields was extremely pleasing considering the skepticism surrounding this area of his game in college.

What makes Brown’s production even more impressive is the fact he was one of the NFL’s most double-teamed defensive tackles despite his lack of experience. This shows just how well respected he was by opposing protection schemes and if he can make the necessary strides during the offseason, the sky is the limit.

Getting a long-term partner alongside Brown is going to be crucial. The Panthers did sign Morgan Fox as a three-technique presence, but considering they released Kawann Short and Zach Kerr, more outside of sixth-rounder Bravvion Roy will be needed.
