Patrick Surtain – Alabama

If the Carolina Panthers want to strengthen their cornerback options at No. 8 overall, then someone like Patrick Surtain will be high on the shortlist. The Alabama standout has enjoyed a glittering college career that ended with yet another national championship victory for the Crimson Tide, where the prospect proved his shutdown capabilities throughout a stunning campaign from a personal perspective.

The player comes from good stock. He is the son of former All-Pro Patrick Surtain Sr. and it’s evident that this fine bloodline and the knowledge acquired from his father has served him well during his career so far.

Surtain had a rare ability to lock up one side of the field with minimal fuss in college. While this will get a lot tougher against bigger and faster wide receivers at the next level, there is every chance he can keep this momentum going in a professional environment.

It’s worth remembering how rookie corners tend to go through more growing pains than most. The Panthers could alleviate this with the presence of both A.J. Bouye and Donte Jackson, which would be invaluable to Surtain’s initial adjustment.

The need for a franchise left tackle such as Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater is there for all to see. But if they opt to go defense, then Surtain will be one of the first names up for consideration.
