4 prospects the Panthers hope fall to Round 2 of the 2021 NFL Draft
By Dean Jones
Asante Samuel Jr. – CB (Florida State)
The Carolina Panthers are clearly interested in Asante Samuel Jr., and with good reason. Those in power have met twice virtually with the former Florida State stud during their evaluation procedures, which means he might just be higher than most on the all-important draft board.
Taking Samuel at No. 8 overall is simply out of the question. However, the prospect of selecting the talented cornerback if they trade out of the pick or even move back into the first should the opportunity arise cannot be ruled out.
Carolina might also decide to wait until No. 39 and see if Samuel is still there for the taking. The prospect is projected to go anywhere from 15 down to the early second round, so the Panthers will be hoping it’s definitely the latter.
Samuel is following in the lofty footsteps of his father – All-Pro Asante Samuel Sr. – and while it is a big ask expecting the same from the incoming college recruit, there is nothing to suggest he cannot go on to have an outstanding NFL career.
The Panthers definitely need some additional depth at the position despite signing A.J. Bouye in free agency. Samuel’s ability in press coverage and incredible determination make him a great fit in Carolina, but just how they can acquire him remains to be seen.
