Derrick Barnes – Purdue

Derrick Barnes split his time at Purdue playing the linebacker and edge rusher roles. He is the type of versatile defender that the Carolina Panthers covet.

Barnes played six games for Purdue this past season totaling 54 tackles, 5.5 for a loss, and one interception. In 2019 playing 12 games for the Boilermakers, He recorded 63 tackles, 11 for a loss, 7.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

The incoming college prospect would be best suited to start his NFL career contributing to special teams while he continues to develop skills in other areas. Barnes isn’t likely to become a starter anytime soon, but he could develop into a depth pass-rushing linebacker with a little more refinement.

Justin Hillard – Ohio State

Ohio State‘s Justin Hillard would be a solid selection with one of Carolina’s final picks. He was more a role player for the Buckeyes during his four-year career, playing behind Tuf Borland, Baron Browning, and Pete Werner.

While not looked at to be an every-down player in the NFL, Hillard could become a core special teams player for the Panthers and provide depth at the SAM linebacker position.

Hillard does offer some skill in pash coverage having the ability to cover the tight end position. But he is good at defending the run and finds a way to be around the ball to make a big play.
