Carolina Panthers make bold move to acquire OT Brady Christensen
By Dean Jones
The Carolina Panthers went bold by moving up to No. 70 and select left tackle Brady Christensen in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The first two rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft haven’t been a problem for the Carolina Panthers in recent years. This is a region where they have excelled more often than not. But what comes after that has been deeply concerning and one of the primary reasons why general manager Marty Hurney was shown the door for a second time before the 2020 season came to a conclusion.
There is plenty of hope Scott Fitterer can fare better following his strong track record with the Seattle Seahawks in Rounds 3-7 in various front-office positions including director of college scouting when the organization selected a quarterback by the name of Russell Wilson out of Wisconsin.
His first-ever third-round pick as a member of the Panthers was Brady Christensen, who must have been a lot higher on their draft board and a trade was made with the Philadelphia Eagles to take him at No. 70.
This is a talented prospect that has plenty of likable traits to call upon that make him a candidate to step in and make his presence felt from the first snap next season.
How will Brady Christensen fit on the Carolina Panthers?
From a character and skill standpoint, there is a lot to like about Christensen’s chances of forging a successful career in the NFL. He has all the size and athleticism that Matt Rhule and the Panthers look for in their college recruits, with his high character and enthusiasm on the gridiron something that should fit in extremely well on and off the field in Carolina.
Picking in the mid-rounds can be something of a crapshoot. But Christensen has some eye-catching production in college and if he can take this momentum into the pros, the Panthers will have a real player on their hands.
Christensen was a risk worth taking for the Panthers at this juncture. It now puts them in a position to strengthen areas of the roster that are blessed with a little more in the way of quality on Day 3, where they’ll be counting on Fitterer’s experience to come up with the right fits.
Although the Jaycee Horn selection caused a stir with Justin Fields still on the board. But as far as talent and upside go, it’s so far, so good for Carolina after the first two days of the all-important draft weekend.
