The Carolina Panthers did make some strides within their run defense last season, although the bar wasn’t exactly high following a dismal 2019 campaign.

That being said, there is more work to be done in order for the Panthers to take that next step and become a dominant unit.

Carolina gave up 121 yards per game on the ground in 2020. Not the worst by any stretch of the imagination, but not even close to being in the top-tier in this particular category.

Thankfully, things look a lot more promising this time around.

Second-year-pro Derrick Brown should come on a significant amount after a tremendous rookie campaign, which has already vindicated the Panthers’ decision to select him at No. 7 overall out of Auburn.

Brown will be aided by the DaQuan Jones, who joined in free agency from the Tennessee Titans and specializes in stopping the run from the interior. This should also provide the front seven with some veteran leadership they were sorely lacking last time out, so hopes are high regarding his potential to make a lasting impression.

Denzel Perryman should solidify the linebacker corps enough for them to make strides following Luke Kuechly’s retirement. The former Los Angeles Charger has is a commanding force against the run and if he can stay free from injury, the Panthers have a real player on their hands.

If Carolina can nullify the run better than they did last season, it’s going to to the team’s chances an endless amount of good.
