Carolina Panthers need a true development project at QB

It appears as if the Carolina Panthers are pretty set on going into the season with Sam Darnold, P.J. Walker, and Will Grier as their options on the 53-man roster. The former USC star is the main man after his trade from the New York Jets, with the two backups fighting it out to be activated on any given week in a similar fashion to what transpired in 2020.

Tommy Stevens was seen as a development project that could be used in a similar fashion to Taysom Hill with the New Orleans Saints, although he was recently released to make room for another wide receiver in C.J. Saunders.

The Panthers probably know what they now have with Grier and Walker, for good or bad.

So what they could use heading into the business end of the preparation period is a prospect with high upside that can be brought along at his own pace on the practice squad.

Jamie Newman fits the bill in that sense and the coaching staff already have a good indication of just what he’s like from a character standpoint.

He’s a hard kid to not root for and loves the game of football.

Newman is a willing learner who knows how much work lies ahead of him, which is the right attitude to deploy following his latest setback.

Stashing Newman on the roster during camp, getting him on the field during the preseason, and putting the player on the practice squad in 2021 could be a shrewd bit of business if the signal-caller picks things up quickly.
