Shaq Thompson – Carolina Panthers OLB

It might be a little strange having someone who was drafted in 2015 on this list. But the simple fact of the matter is Shaq Thompson has yet to show the world just what a dominant player he could be.

Thompson enjoyed some nice moments in 2020 without ever becoming the undisputed leader on defense for the Carolina Panthers. He really missed the presence of Luke Kuechly alongside him at the second level, which exposed some deficiencies in his game that need work this offseason.

The Panthers managed to sign inside linebacker Denzel Perryman from the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency, which should assist Thompson more than most providing the recent acquisition can stay healthy for a consistent run of games.

Carolina avoided the temptation to release or trade Thompson this spring, instead deciding to restructure his deal to free up some additional funds to strengthen problem positions. This should ensure the former first-round pick will be around for the next two years, but what comes after that will be ultimately down to the player.

Thompson certainly looks like he means business. He’s reportedly put on 10 pounds during the offseason and certainly looks more physically imposing than at any stage during his career so far.

Hopefully, for the player and the Panthers, the 2021 season will be the one where Thompson becomes a true dominant figure.
