There probably isn’t a more intriguing player on the Carolina Panthers in 2021 than Jaycee Horn. The No. 8 overall selection joins the organization with a big reputation and the sort of physical skills that could transform the fortunes of their secondary right from the word go.

Horn was clearly extremely high on Carolina’s list of targets during the 2021 NFL Draft. Head coach Matt Rhule went to South Carolina‘s pro day to see the prospect in person and left the showcase in no doubt of his credentials.

Couple this with some outstanding performances against some of the brightest young talent in the college game during his time with the Gamecocks, and it’s not hard to see why Horn was so well thought of by scouts and primary decision-makers across the league.

His initial transition to the pros has been smooth despite missing a portion of voluntary OTAs while the player’s agent and the Panthers finalized his contract.

Horn has the sort of mentality that’s slotted in extremely well within a young and progressive roster, which has only heightened expectations ahead of his rookie campaign.

Having two solid veteran pieces in Donte Jackson and A.J. Bouye should help. But the Panthers are expecting Horn to be the shutdown cornerback they’ve sorely lacked in recent years sooner rather than later.

Whether Horn can do this right away remains to be seen.

There is a lot to like about his chances to become a real star in no time at all, but fans might have to remind themselves that he is a first-year pro learning on the job.

In terms of fit, this is the best possible place for Horn to end up.

Athletic doesn’t begin to describe the options at defensive coordinator Phil Snow’s disposal next season. If everything clicks into place right away, then this unit could become one of the NFL’s best.

Horn will have a huge part to play.

His potential to transform the team’s press coverage is one of the key components behind their decision to bring him on board. If he can hit the ground running and keep mistakes to a minimum, the sky is the limit.

There’s going to be some rough with the smooth from Horn’s standpoint next season. The player will inevitably produce some memorable highlights along the way, but finding consistency coming up against the likes of Michael Thomas, Calvin Ridley, Chris Godwin, and Mike Evans twice a season is going to be of critical importance.

Expecting Horn to play at an All-Pro level right out of the gate is unrealistic.

But there is nothing to suggest he is not capable of this down the line.
