5 Carolina Panthers players fighting for bumper new deals in 2021
By Dean Jones
Donte Jackson – Carolina Panthers CB
There might not be a player on the Carolina Panthers with more at stake than Donte Jackson heading into the 2021 season.
The cornerback has all the skills needed to be a shutdown presence for the foreseeable future. But a troubling injury history might make the organization think twice about giving him the lengthy and expensive deal he’ll undoubtedly want next spring.
If one examines Jackson’s production when he finally got over his turf toe after the Week 13 bye, then giving him a long-term deal is an absolute no-brainer. However, the Panthers haven’t been afraid to let star cornerbacks go in the past and the former LSU doesn’t want to add his name to a list that also includes James Bradberry and Josh Norman.
Jackson must not only produce the goods against some dynamic wide receivers on Carolina’s schedule. But also remain healthy for a consistent period of time.
The potential is there for all to see. Jackson is also set to benefit significantly from having Jaycee Horn and A.J. Bouye hopefully providing the extra bit of quality to take this defense into a completely different stratosphere.
This is the season Jackson has to go from an exciting prospect to an elite corner. It will be interesting to see if he can make the leap.
