Assessing Sam Darnold’s best practice of Panthers training camp so far
By Dean Jones
What comes next for Sam Darnold?
It’s important to remember exactly where we are in the preparation period. The Carolina Panthers recently concluded Day 7 of training camp practice and there is still a long way to go before competitive action begins.
That being said, Sam Darnold is under the microscope more than any other player. Every day is filled with scrutiny and pressure in equal measure and he seems to be taking it all in his stride.
What’s important for Darnold and everyone associated with the Panthers is taking things one practice at a time.
The arm strength is there and he’s made decisions with conviction that didn’t appear much in New York. But there is just no telling for sure until we see the No. 3 overall selection in 2018 out on the gridiron in preseason games.
From a coaches’ perspective, the strides made by Darnold will no doubt encourage them. There are some significant bad habits to remove from his game in a short space of time, so the quicker he picks things up, the better Carolina’s chances will be.
The chatter surrounding a trade for Deshaun Watson doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. But that isn’t any of Darnold’s concern as he starts building some positive momentum.
