What are some big observations to take from practice Day 12 at Carolina Panthers training camp ahead of their first preseason game on Sunday?

The final practice of training camp before the Carolina Panthers go on the road is officially in the books. Matt Rhule’s men now have a free day on Wednesday, which will see them hop on a plane and head to Indianapolis for scrimmages and a preseason game at the Colts to kick-off their warmup fixtures before Week 1 against the New York Jets.

This is the first big test for the Panthers, who’ve shown plenty of encouraging signs during camp so far. Obviously, there are some problem areas that need to be resolved before competitive action, so taking things through into sterner tasks in the coming weeks should serve them well.

Carolina’s coaching staff has put plenty on their players over the last week or so. Something that really brought out the best in some with progression expected after another 5-11 campaign last time around.

We’ll find out much more about this unit in the days ahead. Here are five key observations from practice Day 12 at Panthers training camp.

A lighter day to Carolina Panthers practice

There was a much lighter feel to Panthers training camp practice on Tuesday. It felt more like a walk-through more than a real camp session according to those in attendance, which was probably the right thing to do for the coaching staff.

What comes next is going to be of critical importance to the Panthers.

Keeping the roster fresh for scrimmages in unfamiliar surroundings is the best way to maximize performance. And besides, this was a good teaching day to perhaps work on the little things some more after an intense period once the pads came on.
