Is the NFL sending a message to former Panthers QB Cam Newton?
By Dean Jones
Why are teams avoiding Cam Newton?
There are a number of factors behind NFL teams giving Cam Newton a wide berth following his untimely release from the New England Patriots.
Firstly, the 2015 NFL MVP was released at a time when organizations across the league had already formed their plans at quarterback. So bringing in a big character like Newton was a gamble just before Week 1.
On the subject of Newton’s personality, the message is clear.
NFL teams don’t think he has the right mindset to be a backup. Something the player denied in a video message with his father after being let go.
What Newton had to say regarding his departure was a moot point, in some respects. Such a flamboyant figure putting pressure on a young quarterback is a problem the Patriots or others in the league have decided they don’t need at the present time.
A little harsh? Absolutely.
Especially after everything Newton has accomplished during his incredible career – most of which has been spent with the Carolina Panthers.
It’s also hard to ignore Newton’s vaccination status. Contracting COVID-19 during the 2020 season significantly halted his momentum and missing five days of practice during training camp allowed New England to get a better look at Mac Jones and seal the signal-caller’s fate.
Everyone is free to choose. But the consequences for Newton have been damning.
