4 players the Panthers should have drafted over Thomas Fletcher
By Dean Jones
Mike Strachan – WR
The Carolina Panthers did end up taking Terrace Marshall Jr. and Shi Smith before they selected Thomas Fletcher. But perhaps someone like Mike Strachan would have been better than a long-snapper who may or may not work out moving forward.
Mike Strachan enjoyed a fantastic preseason for the Indianapolis Colts and certainly looks like someone that could become a significant contributor over time. His size and physicality are well documented, with his ball skills also coming to the fore in Week 1 on his way to a pair of receptions for 26 yards.
Strachan has been used sparingly since then. But the Colts don’t have much in the way of reliable targets and it wouldn’t be the biggest shock to see him become more involved as the campaign progresses.
Carolina did have an eye on Strachan during the evaluation process. They held a virtual interview with the player before going in a different direction despite the prospect emanating from a small program.
The Panthers aren’t exactly needy at wide receiver. However, if Strachan goes on to have a highly productive career, there will be a sense of regret where those in power are concerned.
