One thing that the Carolina Panthers have sorely missed since they released Cam Newton is an ability from either Sam Darnold or Teddy Bridgewater to come through in big moments.
This is something that proved to be their undoing despite being more competitive than many expected in 2020 and despite a promising start to the season, Darnold’s regression and clear lack of confidence were glaring.
Admitting you made a mistake is difficult and almost never seen in the NFL. So in that sense, the Panthers deserve a tremendous amount of credit for doing just that and bringing Newton back into the fold in pursuit of making the postseason.
Whether it works out or not has yet to be determined. But it’s hard to look at their situation and not think Newton won’t help in some capacity.
The former No. 1 overall selection has a history of coming through when it counts. A difference-maker in the red zone that rises to the occasion rather than wilts under the spotlight.
Newton brings so much energy, it’s almost mesmerizing. His teammates will undoubtedly feed of this and if the signal-caller can do his part then an extension at the end of the campaign won’t be too far behind.
