Cam Newton must help secure a surprise playoff spot

The Carolina Panthers did not bring in Cam Newton because they’re content with being 5-5. The front office feels like the right pieces are in place to not only secure their place in the postseason but make some noise when the knockout stages begin.

As stated previously, Carolina’s defense is already elite and among the NFL’s most prolific. That’s not even up for discussion anymore.

However, they were only going to get so far with Sam Darnold or P.J. Walker.

Providing there is still some juice left in Newton’s arm, his presence under center is going to completely change the dynamic of Joe Brady’s scheme.

The Panthers are insistent on running the football a lot more – something which they’ve done well two of the last three weeks. If their new quarterback can manage things with more efficiency than Darnold, this is going to be a fun team to watch.

What comes next will be down to Newton.

If he aking advantage of some interesting passing concepts, remove pressure from Christian McCaffrey, and capitalize on potential turnovers, then a winning record is well within the team’s targets.

Considering the state of play in the NFC currently, this would be enough for a postseason berth. Should Newton get the Panthers into the playoffs, then he’ll be in an incredibly strong position when it’s time to begin contract negotiations next spring.
