Alex Erickson – Carolina Panthers WR/KR

Having a productive kick returner is often overlooked by NFL teams. But if you find the right one, it can be a massive difference to the outcome of any specific game.

The Carolina Panthers have used Alex Erickson as their primary returner in 2021. He boasts an 8.3 yards-per-punt return average and has brought back just two kickoffs for 57 yards.

Erickson’s also been a fleeting contributor in the passing game, bringing in all three of his targets for 55 receiving yards. Although it’s surprising he hasn’t been more involved in this regard considering the inconsistencies elsewhere, the Panthers won’t get a better chance to see what the player can do down the stretch.

This could give those in power a better indicator of whether Erickson is worth keeping around. It looks to be hanging in the balance at this juncture, so a momentum-building end to the campaign would only improve his chances.

Carolina has far bigger priorities than Erickson this offseason. The quarterback situation needs a clear plan, a significant makeover of the offensive line is expected, and the team also has to decide which out-of-contract veterans are worthy of new deals.

Erickson is a solid if not spectacular player. He will also be cheap, which is another thing working in his favor.
