Cam Newton – Carolina Panthers QB

It was an emotional occasion at Bank of America Stadium for Cam Newton on Sunday. One only has to examine his reflective post-game comments to see that.

Newton started the game but was pulled after a bad throw resulted in an interception in favor of Sam Darnold. The coaching staff chopped and changed who was under center for the remainder of the game, with the former NFL MVP spending what might be his final drive as a Panther on the sidelines, which depicted a tragic scene.

It remains to be seen whether Newton will be offered a new deal by the Carolina Panthers this offseason. However, based on what we’ve seen and Matt Rhule’s willingness to throw him under the bus, it’s highly unlikely.

If Newton wants to prolong his career beyond 2021, then he must make the final two games of the season count. Perhaps not for his future in Carolina, but convincing another organization that he is worthy of bringing on board.

Teams weren’t exactly beating down Newton’s door before he decided to re-join the Panthers. And production hasn’t been great despite the obvious challenges facing the No. 1 overall selection out of Auburn.

All Newton can do is focus on himself. He might not be the force of old, but the leadership he’s demonstrated remains exemplary.
