Carolina Panthers must extend key defensive pieces
Although the focus will rightfully be on improving a pathetic offense, the Carolina Panthers also have some big decisions upcoming regarding the defensive side of the ball. Some established figures are out of contract and looking for new deals, which could leave Phil Snow’s unit looking very different once competitive action begins once again.
This is a tricky component of the offseason period. But one that should not be overlooked by the organization by any stretch of the imagination.
The likes of Stephon Gilmore, Jermaine Carter, Donte Jackson, Haason Reddick, Juston Burris, and DaQuan Jones are free agents, who all started in 2021. Keeping them all around will be difficult, so the Panthers have to make the right call regarding who stays or goes in the coming weeks.
It’s a precarious situation. And the Panthers cannot afford to let an improving defense get worse by focusing too much on upgrading the offense.
Finding the right balance is the hallmark of every great organization. Something the current Carolina regime has failed to master.
This could change now Scott Fitterer has one year of general manager experience. The knowledge and cap management of Samir Suleiman is going to be pivotal throughout the offseason.
