Carolina Panthers OC role is a big opportunity for Pep Hamilton

For Pep Hamilton, this position would serve as his first opportunity to be an NFL coordinator since he was fired by the Indianapolis Colts at the end of the 2015 season. He is also a Charlotte native and alumnus of West Charlotte High School.

The idea of returning home, even if temporary, has to be somewhat enticing.

One wrinkle in the advertisement for this job could also be tied to Matt Rhule’s job security. If the Carolina Panthers get out to a poor start next year, the head coach could be out of a job before November.

This could provide a unique opportunity for someone like Hamilton to step in as the interim coach and prove what they are capable of when tasked with assuming complete command.

Does Hamilton qualify as the rock star coordinator David Tepper apparently seeks? That’s difficult to predict. But realistically, this just isn’t a very attractive opening.

It’s safe to say that the league’s flashiest young assistant coaches won’t be lining up out the door to interview for this job. Fans probably need to come to terms with the idea that candidates such as Hamilton are going to be as good as it gets.

There is still an entire process that has to unfold, and more candidates will be interviewed in addition to Hamilton. But at this point in time, it’s easy to see why he could be an attractive candidate for Rhule and the Panthers.
