Re-grading the Carolina Panthers draft class after dismal 2021 season
By Dean Jones
Terrace Marshall Jr. – Carolina Panthers WR
After plenty of trading down early on Day 2 of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers eventually pulled the trigger on Terrace Marshall Jr. at No. 59 overall. The gifted wide receiver out of LSU was expected to come in and make an instant impact, which was further bolstered by the reunion with Joe Brady.
As it turned out, Marshall’s impact was minimal. The wideout didn’t factor much in the passing game, was injured for a brief period, and was even a healthy scratch by head coach Matt Rhule for their game at the Miami Dolphins.
This was a major learning curve for Marshall, who found out quickly that life is much tougher at the next level. Of course, an anemic offense and suspect quarterback play didn’t assist his cause, but passing on quality offensive line prospects was a big gamble by the Panthers and one that hasn’t paid off so far.
To say this is a big offseason for Marshall would be an understatement. The receiver has all the physicality and athleticism in the world, but that will count for nothing if he cannot put it all together when it matters most.
Grade: C
It’s far too early to be giving up on Marshall just yet. But some serious improvements are needed both from the player and the Panthers, who need to get him more involved.
