5 worst contracts on the Carolina Panthers in 2022

Sam Darnold – Carolina Panthers QB
- $18.85 million in 2022
Trading for Sam Darnold was a big risk in itself by the Carolina Panthers considering how the former first-round pick performed over his three years with the New York Jets. Three draft selections over two years was the compensation and judging by his efforts in 2021, those in power overpaid to secure his services.
Darnold was unable to build on a promising start and completely fell to pieces without Christian McCaffrey alongside him in the backfield. Processing issues continue to blight his time under center and there has been no progress in terms of footwork despite quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan working tirelessly on this particular element of the player’s game.
In an ideal world, Darnold would now be a free agent and the Panthers could explore viable alternatives. However, the team decided to trigger the USC product’s fifth-year option without properly evaluating him in person.
Both head coach Matt Rhule and general manager Scott Fitterer explained the reasoning behind their decision. But in hindsight, it was inexcusable and paying Darnold $18.85 million fully guaranteed in 2022 severely restricts them at the most important position on the field.
There is a high likelihood of Darnold starting again next season. So it could be another rough ride for the Panthers even if the right recruits are found elsewhere.
