5 QBs the Panthers could sign to compete with Sam Darnold in 2022

Carolina Panthers could sign Jameis Winston
- 2021 team – New Orleans Saints
This would be a shock and much would obviously depend on how Jameis Winston is recovering from a serious knee injury suffered early in 2021. But if the former No.1 overall selection is fit enough to compete in training camp, it could be a useful gamble for the Carolina Panthers to make.
For all Winston’s faults turning the football over, he is capable of generating substantial yards and can make things happen if afforded enough time.
Sitting behind Drew Brees after leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave him a broader sense of perspective. Outside of one or two poor displays, his production this season was more encouraging than anything else despite the absence of New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas.
Whether Winston would be willing to leave the Saints in favor of an NFC South divisional rival is unclear. But the Saints are up against it from a salary-cap perspective and there’s also the small matter of a new head coach to consider after Sean Payton announced his departure.
Winston is a wildcard, there’s no getting away from that.
However, he might be exactly what the Panthers need right now as they look to either get more from Sam Darnold or replace the troubled signal-caller entirely.
The Florida State product is not without faults – the infamous 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions acquired in 2019 could tell you that. But if Winston is healthy enough to participate this offseason, it’s worth considering thanks to his game-changing ability when in the mood.
