Carolina Panthers should avoid Deshaun Watson (for now)
Deshaun Watson is an elite player that represents an upgrade for most NFL teams at the quarterback position. The Houston Texans signal-caller doesn’t land on this list because of his talent – which is elite – but rather the concerning developments away from the gridiron that caused the Clemson product to miss the entire 2021 season.
It’s no secret that the Carolina Panthers were willing to go all-in for Watson last year. Although whether he’d have waived his no trade clause to sign off on the move is another matter.
However, the decision was taken out of his hands when some concerning legal issues relating to sexual misconduct. Watson has denied these allegations and is hoping the matter resolves at the earliest possible opportunity with proceedings now gaining speed.
Much will obviously depend on what the outcomes are with each case. But it’s likely that the Panthers and others across the league will be watching the situation extremely closely.
Houston has moved on from Watson, who demanded a trade during the previous offseason and was cast out into the cold rather than face the Commissioner’s Exempt list in 2021.
For now, the Panthers should avoid Watson. But team owner David Tepper has been relentless in his pursuit of the player and even took one more look shortly before the trade deadline – so the chances of another bold bid could be high.
