Donte Jackson could join the NY Jets
Even though the New York Jets endured another miserable season overall, all hope is not lost as head coach Robert Saleh enters his second season with the organization. There wasn’t much to shout about in terms of results at MetLife Stadium, but some glimmers of hope throughout the campaign indicate more could be on the way in 2022 providing the necessary reinforcements are acquired between now and when competitive action resumes once again.
Saleh knows the importance of having a superb defense from his successful stint with the San Francisco 49ers. The Jets do have some nice pieces to build around, but much more is needed f they want to make serious strides in what’s rapidly becoming a very strong AFC.
One problem the Jets had in 2021 was an inability to prevent opposing teams from doing damage through the air. They conceded 259.4 passing yards per game and going after someone with the shutdown potential of Donte Jackson could be all the team needs to get back on track.
The Carolina Panthers have enough in the way of young talent to ensure Jackson’s departure isn’t sorely felt. But much will depend on whether Keith Taylor Jr. and others can make the necessary improvements under the returning Steve Wilks.
That does not detract from what a tremendous player Jackson is. And he would be an instant upgrade for the Jets given their current options.
With $44.72 million in cap space available, the Jets could also offer Jackson a substantial financial package to further sweeten the deal.
