Carolina Panthers should consider James Conner

Not since Jonathan Stewart have the Carolina Panthers had a downhill, between-the-tackles running back to handle a decent workload. It’s time for the team to return to this style of football by signing James Conner.

However, Conner is not only a downhill runner but a reliable receiver out of the backfield. This is a key trait to have especially when you’re a running back playing second fiddle to Christian McCaffrey who is known for his elite receiving skills for his position.

Conner had one of the best seasons of his career with the Arizona Cardinals, totaling 1,127 scrimmage yards and 18 total touchdowns, including a staggering 15 rushing scores which were good enough for second in the NFL. The former third-round pick displayed a knack for picking up extra yards after contact, great balance, vision, and dependability on a three-down basis.

According to Spotrac, the 26-year-old veteran running back’s market value is projected at just under $6 million with a projected contract of two years and $11.9 million.  With the Panthers having bigger needs on the roster, signing Conner to a team-friendly contract would be the right move at this point.

Whether Conner would be willing to come in and accept a backup role of sorts after the season he’s just had is up for debate. But the Panthers should make a call nonetheless.
