7 RBs the Carolina Panthers should consider in 2022 free agency
Carolina Panthers should consider Darrel Williams
One of the biggest reasons why the running back position has lost its value is because teams have been able to get production out of former journeymen, undrafted free agents, or Day 3 draft picks. Darrel Williams is an example of how you can get production out of a less touted prospect entering the league.
Williams enjoyed a breakout season in his fourth year with the Kansas City Chiefs. Due to injuries at running back, he stepped up and went on to lead the team in rushing yards and touchdowns.
The former LSU Tiger finished the 2021 campaign with more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage and eight total touchdowns.
It’s unclear what the Chiefs will do with Williams this offseason. If they choose to let him walk, there will be plenty of running back-needy organizations waiting to pay him, including the Carolina Panthers.
Williams is not the type of back that will run away from defenders and break tackle angles.
However, Williams is also another downhill runner who is incredibly difficult to bring down after contact due to great balance and core strength. The player is someone who could take over the role of the short-yardage back for the Panthers in an effort to ease Christian McCaffrey’s workload.
According to Spotrac, the fourth-year veteran is expected APY is $2.2 million. Williams’ market value could be very enticing for Carolina if they’re looking for good cheap options in free agency.
