5 under-the-radar prospects Panthers should watch at 2022 combine

Carolina Panthers should watch Brandon Smith
Strengthening the linebacker corps would be advantageous for the Carolina Panthers this offseason. Jermaine Carter just didn’t do enough to convince anyone he’s the long-term heir to Luke Kuechly’s throne and unless he’s extended, it could lead to a third starting middle linebacker in as many seasons.
This is a position where the Panthers have been spoiled over the years. A trend that needs to continue this offseason to give Phil Snow’s defense another significant shot in the arm.
Going down the draft route could provide long-term stability if Carolina finds the right fit. Outside of the obvious choices atop the board, Brandon Smith is another worth watching and is going to be one of the top testers beyond all doubt at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine.
Smith plays fast and aggressively. His explosiveness is typical of Penn State defenders of recent years and he is versatile enough to assist in any position across the second level.
Another area where Smith will excel is during the interview process. His work ethic is exceptional, he is a student of the game, and wants to get better – something he’s more than capable of.
Providing Smith can reduce his missed tackles and develop more patience against the run, then it’s going to help his cause enormously. It’s hard to gauge where he’ll get drafted, but don’t be surprised if the defender enters first-round consideration after testing.
