Carolina Panthers should consider Linval Joseph

After spending the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, Linval Joseph is entering free agency looking for a new team. At 33 years old, his production dipped a bit as he generated one sack, six tackles for loss, and four quarterback hits in 28 games played.

While the stats aren’t all that appealing, Joseph can be a serviceable option among the defensive interior rotation. Not to mention the leadership and experience he brings to the table that can be a learning point for younger players.

Prior to his time with Los Angeles, he spent four seasons with the New York Giants and six with the Minnesota Vikings. Joseph won a Super Bowl in just his second season and was a two-time Pro Bowler under Mike Zimmer.

Joseph’s contract with the Chargers paid out at $17 million over two years. Based on his recent production, it is fair to assume his next deal will be at a discounted price, which could work in the Carolina Panthers’ favor.

Over his 11 years in the NFL, Joseph has had his fair share of wear and tear, as he only played 47 percent of the Chargers defensive snaps in 2021. That number likely won’t increase moving forward and the Panthers, if they choose to pursue him in free agency, should use him on a snap count given his age and size.

Joseph is past his prime and his production with the Giants and Vikings may never surface again. However, the leadership and mentorship he could provide to Derrick Brown and other young pieces on the defense could be worth bringing him to Charlotte on a one-year deal.
