Carolina Panthers should consider Vernon Butler

Probably a last resort option. But why not bring back a familiar face?

Vernon Butler started his career with the Carolina Panthers when he was selected at No. 30 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. Coming off the team’s Super Bowl appearance, the defensive tackle was brought in to bolster the line but didn’t exactly live up to expectations and provided one-too-many lackluster performances.

Since leaving Carolina, Butler signed with the Buffalo Bills on a two-year contract, but probably won’t be returning on a new deal since he played just 285 defensive snaps in 2021, the second-lowest in his career.

If this is the case, then why would the Panthers consider bringing him back?

Well, the Panthers have limited cap space available. Acquiring Butler on a cheap contract can work for both parties.

Carolina nabs a veteran on a minimum deal. While Butler receives arguably his last opportunity to prove he still belongs in this league.

Based on his inability to exceed expectations with Carolina and now in Buffalo, there might not be much appeal from the rest of the league to sign the five-year veteran. Similar to Cam Newton’s situation, there might not be many options out there and the only decision could be to join the team that took a chance on him in the first place.
