6 reasons for and against the Panthers trading for Jordan Love

Carolina Panthers trade for another QB on hope alone
Remember a year ago the Carolina Panthers thought they could rejuvenate Sam Darnold‘s career? Yeah, that didn’t go so well and it’s actually why they’re in this position today.
Jordan Love is a bit different than Darnold since we haven’t actually seen him play much. But it’s hard to imagine the fanbase being thrilled with the team trading for a guy that is unproven.
Plus, as mentioned earlier, history hasn’t been the kindest when it comes to backups turning into successful quarterbacks. This situation is a bit different, but if Love was that good, the Green Bay Packers might’ve given him more opportunities or already received a big trade package.
That’s all assumptions, though. If Carolina did end up trading for the player and he fell flat, the franchise would be set back another few years. This is something team owner David Tepper cannot afford if he wants to keep fans’ trust.
Darnold is the obvious complication here. The Panthers picked up his fifth-year option with a guaranteed $18.85 million and one suspects it’s going to be extremely difficult to find a willing trade partner without taking on a large chunk of this deal.
It will really depend on how hot the market is for Love. If the Panthers sense that many teams aren’t trying to get him, they probably should stay that course as well.
