5 bargain-basement free agents the Panthers must consider in 2022

Carolina Panthers must consider Jayron Kearse
Solidifying the safety position opposite Jeremy Chinn is something the Carolina Panthers should think about this offseason. Juston Burris’ efforts were hindered once again by injury and Sean Chandler’s inconsistencies in coverage mean an upgrade or two is the most likely outcome to this scenario.
This is a solid draft class overall at the position, with some intriguing prospects set to be available in the mid-to-late rounds. However, the need to win now is beyond urgent and this could lead the Panthers into the free-agent market for a high-impact individual that can come in and contribute right away.
If this is an avenue Carolina goes down, then Jayron Kearse deserves a close look and might be available for a team-friendly contract. The Dallas Cowboys are up against it from a cap perspective despite the pending release of Amari Cooper, which could leave the veteran on the outside looking in depending on demands.
Kearse enjoyed the finest season of his pro career by a considerable margin in Dallas, gaining 101 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 10 passes defended, two interceptions, and a 76.8 grade from Pro Football Focus. He is no stranger to the area having played his college football at Clemson and there is a lot to like about his fit within Phil Snow’s defensive scheme.
Carolina would benefit greatly from Kearse’s presence alongside Chinn. It could also allow the former second-round pick to move back to an outside linebacker if Snow chooses.
