3 reasons Baker Mayfield could be the Carolina Panthers’ consolation prize

Carolina Panthers can buy low on Baker Mayfield
The Houston Texans are trading Deshaun Watson at his peak value when you consider his contract and the point he is at in his career. The Carolina Panthers would be paying for the signal-caller based on projections and the seasons he’s put together almost from the moment the player entered the league.
This perspective is understandable. Watson has been sensational on the field even if his reputation has been tainted an untold amount by these serious allegations.
However, Carolina would have the opportunity to do the opposite with quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield is coming off of season-ending surgery and a disappointing year where he played hurt. He might be at his lowest value since his senior year in college and it seemed as if he said his goodbyes to fans with an emotional social media post on Tuesday.
Carolina would be buying low on Mayfield and allow him to come in without the pressure that would be heaped on Watson. There is also a massive chip on the player’s shoulder as he looks for an extension beyond the upcoming campaign.
Mayfield can come in on the final year of his deal and show he is the future in Carolina. If not, the Panthers can fire Matt Rhule and let Sam Darnold and Mayfield walk in free agency – finding a fresh start through the draft or in next year’s trade market.
Now isn’t the right time to go all-in on Watson, and it’s unlikely he is now going to come on board. Mayfield comes with a lower cost and could be more than capable of being a franchise guy.
