4 solid landing spots for Jermaine Carter in 2022 free agency
By Dean Jones
Washington Commanders
Not only is there a strong presence of former Carolina Panthers players on the Buffalo Bills, but Ron Rivera and Marty Hurney are also bringing some old faces to the Washington Commanders since both joined the organization last year. This could see Jermaine Carter end up in the nation’s capital as a result, although nothing is guaranteed just because all parties involved have worked together previously.
The Commanders do have a talented young linebacker manning the interior in Jamin Davis. Outside of this, options remain pretty slim and Carter could provide a solid veteran backup presence that could fill in when needed.
In all honesty, this might be the best fit of all for Carter given his familiarity with Rivera and the opportunity for playing time. Whether there is mutual interest is still undermined, even though it does make a ton of sense from the outside looking in.
Carter managed 88 tackles last season, which only told half the story. Perhaps linking back up with Rivera could propel his game to new heights and it’s also worth remembering that Hurney was one of the primary decision-makers that drafted the linebacker to Carolina in the first place.
If the market ends up being robust during the third wave of free agency for Carter, then it might come down to playing time with no starting chance guaranteed. However, if the Commanders also throw their hat in the ring then the player will no doubt welcome this scenario with open arms.
