When one looks at Kenny Pickett’s traits and how they might translate over to the NFL, the first thing that stands out is his composure. The quarterback rarely gets flustered in the pocket thanks to impressive footwork and an ability to go through progressions effectively, which cannot be said of most prospects at the position entering the league this year.
This is matched by a nice enough velocity that allows Pickett to make throws effortlessly. Although he is not blessed with the most elite arm imaginable, it is sufficient enough to get the football downfield should the opportunity arise.
Pickett is patient when it comes to plays developing and has no trouble gaining yards on the ground when the situation calls for it. His tight window accuracy leaves reasons to be encouraged and the player’s character is also something teammates get behind in a big way.
Hand size and arm strength have been the two biggest criticisms of Pickett throughout the evaluation process. There is also a notion that his ceiling might not be that high regarding further development.
Another area that Pickett needs to develop is getting the right touch on his throws and putting his wide receivers in the best position to make plays once the football is in their hands. The signal-caller also tends to get a little flustered when blitz packages come flying in his face, which also needs some refinement at the next level.
Pickett’s throwing motion isn’t textbook. But this wouldn’t be that much of a red flag considering how much the game has evolved in recent years.
