Panthers 2022 draft scouting report: Is Kenny Pickett the guy?
By Dean Jones
How would Kenny Pickett fit on the Carolina Panthers?
- Developmental QB, potential Year 2 starter
Expecting Kenny Pickett to walk into the Carolina Panthers and instantly turn them from also-rans into title contenders is majorly pushing the boundaries of reality. That’s not to say he won’t become a solid professional over time providing the problems in his game are worked out by whatever team takes him on, but it won’t be right out of the gate.
The Panthers clearly like Pickett and have spoken glowingly about the prospect throughout the offseason. Talking up a player is one thing, but having the courage to reach and select them so high in the draft is something else entirely.
Pickett could be the one that benefits most from a weak-looking quarterback class. Carolina needs to find a long-term solution under center – although Matt Rhule stated he is expecting a big leap from Sam Darnold in 2022 – so going down the draft route with few options remaining elsewhere is not out of the question.
There’s little chance Pickett would be ready to start Week 1 unless his preparation period is absolutely flawless. Darnold is under contract until 2023, so the Panthers could slot the rookie behind the fifth-year quarterback until he is ready to assume command.
Simply put, this is a feast or famine move by the Panthers.
Pickett is undeniably talented and arguably the best of this year’s bunch. But Carolina needs help right away and this might see them go down the veteran route once again or even stick with Darnold in the hope he can somehow salvage his career.
