There is a lot to like about Matt Corral when putting on the film. But there are also some things the quarterback needs to work on considerably to stand any chance of being a productive NFL starter.
One thing that really stands out is Corral’s release, which is lightning fast and already appears ready for the next level. The signal-caller is also extremely athletic and has no trouble maneuvering in the pocket and gaining substantial yards on the ground when required.
Corral is accurate enough, especially over short to intermediate distances. He also has the quickest information processing of any prospect in this class.
Another thing Corral has going for him is the standard of competition he faced in college. Playing well in the SEC is different from other conferences and it’s also worth remembering that he outshone Malik Willis in a big way when Ole Miss downed Liberty in convincing fashion last season.
As stated previously, there are flaws. Corral doesn’t have the highest velocity on his throws and decision-making is also something that’s proved to be his downfall on occasions.
He is undersized and looks it, which could lead to problems against more imposing NFL defenders. Corral must also get to grips with improving his ability to sufficiently make pre-snap reads to give the signal-caller a better chance of doing damage.
With all that being said, Corral has far more good than bad surrounding his talent. Whether that’s enough for the Carolina Panthers to take the plunge is the big question that will run for a few more weeks yet.
