Panthers 2022 draft scouting report: Matt Corral is the wildcard
By Dean Jones
How would Matt Corral fit on the Carolina Panthers?
- Developmental QB, potential starter over time
Whichever way the Carolina Panthers go if they eventually choose to select someone from the college ranks, it is unlikely to be a quick fix. No signal-caller entering the league this year comes with the Day 1 starting potential of a Trevor Lawrence, so much will depend on how quickly they can adapt and ready themselves for a starting job.
Matt Corral might be the most pro-ready, although Kenny Pickett probably thinks he should also have this distinction. However, slotting him in as the No. 1 option right away could jeopardize the player’s chances and that’s without factoring in his recent injury problems into the equation.
The Panthers are facing a monumental decision that will likely have some big-time repercussions for head coach Matt Rhule. Banking his future on Corral is a significant gamble whichever way one looks at it and there is also the small matter of needing a franchise left tackle to consider.
Corral would have some top coaches around him in Ben McAdoo and Sean Ryan. So this is a solid landing spot with the added incentive of potentially gaining meaningful reps at some stage during his rookie year.
There is a lot of speculation surrounding the Panthers and supposed options at No. 6 – which is their only selection in the top-100 right now. This is exactly how Carolina wants it to be and is likely to continue until it’s time for them to hand in their card.
