Cam Newton – Former Carolina Panthers QB

The situation regarding Cam Newton remains in flux. He has reportedly received plenty of interest by his own admission in a text message to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and the Carolina Panthers have not completely shut the door on a potential return, either.

Newton came back in difficult circumstances midway through the season. Something he deserves credit for and especially considering the way he was treated by the organization when released the first time around.

The Auburn product injected life into the team – albeit for a brief period – but the obstacles in front of him were simply too much to overcome and Newton was also less than impressed by the mindset of some within the locker room.

It might not have been the fairytale Newton and the fans were hoping for. But it did provide them with some clarity and closure after the messy circumstances that engulfed his 2020 departure.

The Panthers are not going to guarantee Newton a starting job. Although one could argue that he’d be a better option and provide more hope than Sam Darnold.

However, being a backup might also be difficult for a player that was once the face of the entire league during his exceptional 2015 campaign that eventually finished with an NFL MVP award and a Super Bowl defeat.

Carolina giving Newton another contract with a legitimate chance to start would be surprising. Much will probably depend on whether they go back into the trade market or pull the trigger on a quarterback during the 2022 NFL Draft.
