Panthers 7-round 2022 NFL mock draft: Dreams come true in Round 1
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers select Josh Paschal
- Position: Defensive End
- Height: 6-foot-3
- Weight: 268 pounds
- Arm Length: 32.75 inches
- 2021 PFF grade: 90.0
Judging by how aggressive the Carolina Panthers have been in the trade market, it would be a surprise to see them wait around until Round 4 for another selection. General manager Scott Fitterer is gaining a fierce reputation for his draft-day movement up and down the board, so in this scenario, a deal is struck with the Los Angeles Rams to get them into the third round.
Losing Haason Reddick in free agency was almost inevitable once the Panthers opted to let the exceptional edge rusher test the free-agent market. The former Temple star gained 11 sacks during his one and only season in Carolina, which resulted in the player getting a well-deserved contract befitting of his production from the Philadelphia Eagles.
This leaves the Panthers short of genuine pass-rushing options opposite Brian Burns. Although there remains some hope that Yetur Gross-Matos and Marquis Haynes can increase their influence from more prominent positions on the depth chart.
Adding another gifted prospect from the college ranks might be something to consider. Josh Paschal definitely fits the bill and it’s hard to look at the Kentucky product’s level of production in 2021 and think he wouldn’t make a smooth transition into Phil Snow’s scheme.
Paschal is a menace against the run, is an exceptional tackler, and has no trouble shifting opposing offensive linemen off their spot in double-quick time. This is reflected with 15 tackles for loss, five sacks, and 52 tackles during his final season with the Wildcats and even though he wouldn’t be classed as the most explosive, there is plenty to suggest he could assist the Panthers right away.
