How would Sam Howell fit on the Carolina Panthers?

  • Developmental QB, potential Year 2 starter

It’s evident that this year’s draft class does not feature a prospect like Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence, or Zach Wilson that can enter the league and start from the jump. This quarterback group’s success will depend on where each prospect lands, what type of environment are they in, and if their respective NFL team can develop them into long-term starters.

Such is the case of Sam Howell. It’s obvious that he isn’t considered as the consensus top quarterback with Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett, nor is he someone that should start from the get-go.

However, Howell has the tools necessary to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. He has shown to have great leadership skills, toughness, good overall arm talent, football intelligence, clean mechanics, and mobility out of the pocket. This could be a good baseline for the Carolina Panthers to consider.

The Panthers are entering a very crucial NFL Draft that could have substantial repercussions on what the future may look like for Matt Rhule. Even so, the head coach could be on his way out of the building regardless of what happens this offseason.

Howell would be a perfect trade-back option for the Panthers if Scott Fitterer chose to make the move. While he didn’t play in a west-coast offense with pro-style concepts, Howell has the football IQ and work ethic to develop into a starter in Ben McAdoo’s offense.

With only one selection in the first 100 picks of the draft, dropping down should be a top option for the Panthers. If they were to do so, Howell could be a potential target.
