Cam Newton – Former Carolina Panthers QB

The quarterback conundrum has gone on long enough. It’s something that’s continued to hold the Carolina Panthers back thanks to clear mismanagement and questionable personnel moves that began with Cam Newton‘s release, signing Teddy Bridgewater in free agency, dumping him after just one season, and giving up three draft selections over a two-year period to land Sam Darnold from the New York Jets.

This isn’t counting Newton’s incredible return to the Panthers once Darnold went to the reserve/injured list, sparking a level of enthusiasm and excitement that has been lacking since Matt Rhule took over as head coach.

Of course, results weren’t up to scratch and Rhule was intent on making life extremely difficult for Newton in one last bid to be proven right. He benched the former NFL MVP every chance he got and once Darnold was healthy enough to go, this became a permanent arrangement.

Newton was reportedly offered a contract to be Deshaun Watson’s backup in Carolina if the Panthers had been successful in their controversial year-long pursuit of the signal-caller. But that didn’t come to fruition and considering other options are at a premium, perhaps giving the Auburn product a full offseason to compete with Darnold wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world at this juncture.

Everything remains on the table. But Newton has received interest from elsewhere by his own admission, so it’s just a case of sitting back and letting things play out.
