Carolina Panthers could draft Jalen Wydermyer

  • Tight End | Texas A&M

There was once upon a time when Jalen Wydermyer was a sure-fire first-round selection and the top tight end entering the league this year. The Texas A&M product is a physically imposing individual who represents a matchup nightmare for slot cornerbacks or linebackers when in the mood, but he didn’t meet expectations in 2021 and has seen his draft stock slide considerably following poor testing during evaluations.

Wydermyer could go anywhere from Rounds 3-6 as a result. A steep fall from where he was originally anticipated to be taken according to most respected analysts across the country.

This might be a little harsh on Wydermyer, who gained 118 receptions for 1,468 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns over three seasons with the Aggies. But average agility and a distinct lack of blocking prowess make selecting him risky business and especially relatively high in the draft process.

The Carolina Panthers brought back Ian Thomas and Tommy Tremble still possesses enough potential to develop further. Ben McAdoo’s presence as the team’s new offensive coordinator will help, but it could be beneficial for those in power to bring in another option to develop in case their current options don’t pan out as expected.

If Wydermyer makes it into Round 4 and the Panthers have sorted out other needs, then this is a high-risk, high-reward pickup that Carolina might consider.
