Carolina Panthers could select Sam Howell (North Carolina)

Measurements:

  • Height: 6-foot-1 | Weight: 218 pounds

2021 Stats:

  • 3,056 passing yards (62.5% completion)
  • 24 touchdowns
  • 9 interceptions
  • 154.2 passer efficiency rating
  • 91.1 PFF grade

This would be a popular selection by the Carolina Panthers given Sam Howell’s connection to the region. His hugely successful spell under center for North Carolina was littered with fine achievements and although the quarterback seemingly regressed in 2021 without almost every top weapon at his disposal, it would be foolish to write the player off entirely.

Howell was under consideration to be the first quarterback selected in 2022 after a 2020 season that thrust him into the national spotlight. A large number of his teammates bolted for the NFL last year, which saw the signal-caller evolve his game to become more of a threat running the football rather than through the air.

Many can knock Howell for this. But it’s a sign of strong character to sacrifice a general perception in pursuit of helping his team win.

Howell has the accuracy and timing that should go down well at the next level. His competitive nature was evident throughout his time with the Tarheels and makes a lot of the game look easy with exceptional timing, footwork, and athleticism.

Getting the right velocity on his throws will only help Howell. Some decision-making is also suspect at times, but there is far more good than bad and if the Panthers trade down, this is a likely scenario.
