4 pros and cons to the Carolina Panthers drafting a quarterback in 2022
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers would be reaching for a QB within a weak class
There isn’t much fanfare surrounding the 2022 quarterback class. Certainly not compared to a 2021 group that contained the likes of Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Mac Jones.
While no rookie made a lasting impact last season, their hopes for the future look a little more promising than anyone entering the league this year. That’s not to say one or two don’t possess starting-caliber capabilities down the line, but it might take some time before their potential is fully realized.
As stated previously, the Carolina Panthers need a quick fix after their failed moves at the most important position on the field. Taking a signal-caller is considered to be a major reach by most respected analysts, but this is a situation that the organization brought on itself and has to face the consequences of previous actions.
This is quite the predicament, obviously. But the Panthers are going to put their name on a rookie quarterback at some stage and this could be Matt Rhule’s final chance to do so.
In truth, he should have done this a lot sooner. If Rhule goes down this route now and the team fails miserably during the upcoming campaign, then it might be a wasted pick with a new regime potentially coming in and taking their pick from a much stronger quarterback contingent set to declare in 2023.
It might be smarter to select an elite left tackle and go in a different direction. However, when it comes to the quarterback position, this regime hasn’t been known for its good choices.
