Matt Rhule has shown a real preference for bringing in players that he’s already familiar with from the college level. This has led to moderate success, but something that could continue this year if the right opportunity comes along.
One player that came into the evaluation process riding on the crest of a wave is Abram Smith. His production for the Baylor Bears in 2021 was outstanding and he was also one of the top performers at the 2022 Senior Bowl to further warrant consideration.
Smith’s contact balance is superb. This allows the player to absorb hits and keep his legs moving for additional yards – which is always a highly sought-after trait on the professional scene.
There are flashes of burst when examining the film where Smith is concerned. The prospect also possesses quick feet and adequate speed in open space.
As is the case with most lower-end prospects, Smith might take time to adjust thanks to his inconsistencies in pass blocking and making almost no impression in the passing game. He might also lack the necessary size and bulk to become a power running back against more imposing NFL defenders.
Nobody will know more about what Smith could bring to the Carolina Panthers than Rhule. Whether that comes to fruition is another matter entirely.
