Carolina Panthers could draft Jelani Woods
- Tight End | Virginia
- Relative Athletic Score – 10.00
It was a shock to see the Carolina Panthers extend Ian Thomas rather than allow him to take his chances elsewhere in free agency. However, new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s belief in the player coupled with his intent to utilize tight ends more could mean this is a move that pays off in a big way if the former fourth-round pick out of Indiana takes on the challenge in the right way.
Tommy Tremble also has the potential to flourish in McAdoo’s system. The Notre Dame product already has some exceptional blocking ability, so improving his pass-catching prowess is the next big step en route to becoming the complete package.
With that being said, the Panthers might look towards the draft for another option. Jelani Woods has gained more traction than most during the assessment process with an unbelievable period of testing to attain a perfect Relative Athletic Score of 10.
This has done his chances of a Day 2 selection no harm at all. Woods transferred from Oklahoma State to Virginia and also transitioned from a wide receiver to tight end last season, something that brought around a significant upturn in production at just the right time.
Woods has the route-running and ball skills to create mismatch problems, there’s no doubt about that. But whether Carolina can fill other needs before he comes off the board is debatable.
