Carolina Panthers could draft Zyon McCollum
- Cornerback | San Jose State
- Relative Athletic Score – 10.00
The Carolina Panthers managed to extend Donte Jackson this offseason, keeping continuity in a cornerback room that is full of young talent ready to take the next step. Jaycee Horn’s impending return from injury only strengthens this group, which is arguably the strongest on the depth chart right now.
General manager Scott Fitterer is always keen to select the best player available rather than focus on team needs. Much will depend on where Zyon McCollum is taken, but it could be an enticing pickup in the mid-to-late rounds if the opportunity arises.
McCollum blew away scouts with testing that was nothing short of phenomenal. His Relative Athletic Score of 10.00 is further proof of this and even though he doesn’t come from the biggest college program imaginable, he has traits that are always a hot commodity across the league.
The San Jose State product holds his own in man coverage situations and elite speed ensures he’s capable of going downfield smoothly with wide receivers. McCollum also put his physicality to good use against the run and there is plenty of scope for further improvements to his body to cope with the testing NFL environment.
This would help McCollum with strength issues he suffers on occasion. Footwork is also something the prospect needs to work on against wideouts that will punish every mistake.
